The Sunflower Scholarship
The Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarship honors an outstanding artist and devoted alumna of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. Born in Danville, Virginia, in 1904, Harriet Fitzgerald is remembered as a "Renaissance woman" and "magnificent human being" by those who knew her. She graduated in 1926 from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with a major in English. At R-MWC Fitzgerald was an active member of the student body, serving in various leadership roles, most notably as president of student government.
The Fitzgerald Scholarship will provide a highly motivated young woman who is passionate about learning and eager to attend a woman’s college with a scholarship to a woman’s college in the United States or Canada. She must possess a stellar high school record, strong references, and a desire to make a contribution to society, as well as a strong sense of self.
The Harriet Fitzgerald Scholarship will be awarded for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The Scholarship Selection Committee will notify the winner of the award in April of 2013 and at that time the winner will be presented with a check for half the award amount. The remainder of the award will be presented at the beginning of the second semester of the student's first year. In the event that the student also received a tuition discount or scholarship from the institution she has chosen, the Fitzgerald Scholarship will cover costs not covered by the college.
The application deadline is March 1, 2013. The application must include the following:
- A completed application form
- An official high school transcript or GED
- An official report of SAT or ACT scores
- A 500-word personal essay on interests, goals and accomplishments, and the advantages of a woman's college in fulfilling the applicants long-term goals
- One recommendation from a teacher and two from community members (club adviser, employer, or other non-family)
- Names of women's colleges to which the applicant has applied
Interested students should mail their completed applications (including all material cited above), postmarked on or before March 1, 2013 to:
